Allergen Forecasting & Collection

We monitor and analyze outdoor allergen levels across Canada

Aerobiology Research Laboratories uses this information to produce reports and forecasts for media, allergists, research institutions, and pharmaceutical researchers.

Current Collection Sites

The pollen forecast is designed with these primary considerations; pollen allergenicity and the allergy sufferer. This is accomplished by examining the combination of trees, grasses and weeds present at each site and the degree of discomfort to be experienced by the allergy sufferer.

When describing if the pollen level is low, moderate or high we are trying to place each pollen or spore within a range where allergic reactions are likely to occur. Those who are highly sensitized may react to certain allergens when the counts are in the low level whereas others are likely to only react when they are in the moderate or high levels.

Samples are collected daily on rotation impaction samplers at stations across Canada. Samples are delivered to Aerobiology Research Laboratories and analyzed by highly trained technicians via optical microscopy and computer aided calculations. Standardization of sampling methodology and analysis ensures data comparability. The latest available analysis, which is always between one and seven days old, is used to support the generation of reports and forecast products. All data is warehoused to support statistics and research activities to continually improve forecasting products.

We can provide a current allergen forecast as well as generalized information on pollen and mold spores for each of our 30 locations across the country.

Pollen Variability

Season Start and End Variations

Graph shows variability in the start and end dates of any particular season. Knowing the season start and end dates is important in regulating activities for allergy sufferers and to assist practitioners in advising patients as to when to start their medication.

Pharmaceutical companies can utilize this information in predicting inventory requirements, developing just in time management systems (J.I.T) and shipping stock.

Pollen Concentration Level Variations

Pollen concentration is another important factor in monitoring, regulating activities and medication for allergy sufferers and allergists.

This information is helpful to pharmaceutical companies trying to predict product consumption, shipping times and historically speaking in developing inventory and minimizing storage costs and
wasted materials.
